Working between the Delaware River and Delaware Canal, the project location was constantly flooded during construction of an 84” diameter casing under I-295 in Yardley, PA. Large boulders embedded in wet sandy gravel made project conditions unstable. The work crew used a guided boring machine to install stabilization grout pipes and then solidified the soil strata. The auger boring method was abandoned at roughly 100 LF into the crossing due to the presence of numerous boulders and obstructions. The crew used tunneling and jacking methods to install the remaining 80 LF. With the 72” product pipe in place, the crew used a lightweight grout to reduce buoyancy forces for annular fill.
